This Nerdy Momma
Come and meet this nerdy Momma!
I was just writing on my blog the other day how letting your dorkiness show is more socially acceptable online - ever notice that?
I'm going to be truthful with you. I am a NERD. I used to hide it (as best I could, anyway) when I was growing up, but it's all coming out now. And you know what? I ENJOY being nerdy!
So pop in your pocket protector, and push back your taped together granny glasses and let your nerdiness out while I tell you about all-things nerdy-Momma. =)
Definition of "Nerdy"
Dictionary.com's first definition was not terribly flattering, so we'll go with definition #2:
"an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit: a computer nerd. "
The Book Nerd
I've always loved reading. I remember being in Kindergarten and bringing home TONS of books to read to the family.
When I was in middle school, I always had my nose buried in a book on the bus. But hey, in my defense, I was the first one on and the last one off, and my friends got on & off around the middle of the trip...!
Even today, I read every free chance I get (though a lot of that reading tends to be on the computer....more on that later). In fact, I can't fall asleep at night unless it's with a book. And yes, I do often fall asleep with the book in front of my face. Or I jolt awake when it hits the floor. =)
Most of the time I will have 2 or 3 (or 4 or 5!) books that I'm "in the middle of" at a time!
I'm raising little bookworms, too. It's rare that we leave the library with less than 25 books (and sometimes we have that many checked out from several libraries at once....oy!)

The Computer Nerd
In my pre-kid life I was a software engineer (which is a lofty job title for a computer programmer). Now that I'm a full-time Mommy (though I do work part-time and bring the kiddos along), I find other ways to get my coding on - I like setting up websites, and of course Squidoo sites.
Let's be completely honest here, though - I am addicted to the computer. I'm on Twitter, Facebook, working on my own website, or setting up/administering various other sites. Obviously you can find me here on Squidoo, or I'm researching things to keep the kiddos from bouncing off the walls, printable crafts to keep them occupied while I'm trying to work, easy recipes to make for dinner....
I was even in such a desperate state to find something in my house that I had searched in every conceivable spot for, that I found myself about to Google "where did I put my.....".
Pretty nerdy, huh? :)

The "Craft" Nerd
My husband likes to tease me for my "old lady crafts", as he likes to call them (I'm in my early 30s).
I LOVE to Crochet. It's probably my all-time favorite craft, since I can take it along with me, or do it while I'm watching TV, etc. If crocheting is your "thing" too, you can check out my lens about How to Crochet a Prayer Shawl. This is the pattern that I use for all of my prayer shawls!
I enjoy sewing, though I'm not terribly great at it. Seriously, I spend more time ripping out the stitches than I do actually sewing them. And when I say sewing, I do mean by a machine, of course! I did, however, manage to make my own pattern for Safe Superhero Capes and have given several as gifts.
I've tried my hand at quilting, and I do enjoy it, but I don't have a whole lot of time for it with 2 little ones running around.
My first "granny craft" that I started out with was Cross-Stitching. It's great, and the end product is gorgeous, but it takes way more concentration than I have at this point in my life. =)
What crafts do you enjoy the most?
The Learning Nerd
I L-O-V-E learning. Remember how I mentioned that I'm almost always reading at least 3 books at the same time? Yup, mmm-hmmm. The way that works is that one is a fiction book that I can unwind to, and the rest are Parenting books, homeschooling books, books on Prayer or encouragement, etc. I would learn my osmosis if I could!
In my multiple internet quests, I love finding tutorials on anything and everything - craft tutorials, coding tutorials - you name it!
And now that we're homeschooling, I get to satisfy my own love for learning while working to instill it in my kiddos as well.
Just as a disclaimer, I'm not much of a classroom learner. I like being able to learn on my own, and at my own pace. Plus my attention span can be very, very short at times, so I have to be able to put it down and come back to it whenever I feel like it. Heehee.
Nerd Humor
Star Wars and Superhero Nerdy.....
My husband has totally nerd-ified me in this arena. I know more about Star Wars than I ever thought I would (comes in handy with my soon-to-be 6-year-old. He's Star Wars crazy though he has yet to see any of the movies. He asks 90 million questions about the characters, though!).
I've also seen all of the new Superhero movies - Spiderman, Iron Man, X-Men.....etc., etc. And I can recognize Stan Lee in his movies....
I'm a total Wheel of Time nerd (How Much Do You Know About the Wheel of Time?)....again, all thanks to hubby!
