The Best Preschool Books: Reading to the Preschool and Under Crowd
As a mommy of a little boy who LOVES to be read to, I have discovered that there are MANY awful books out there that are passed off as children's books. From poorly written books to inappropriate content, it baffles me that these books are being mass-produced and circulated.
On the flip side, however, there are some truly genius books out there that we have fallen head-over-heels for. I have compiled a list (in no particular order) of the Best Preschool Books that we have found and will read over and over again.
Hilda Must Be Dancing! - by Karma Wilson
Hilda is a Hippo that LOVES to dance. The only problem is that she shakes the whole jungle when she's doing it. Her friends suggest different hobbies for her to replace this noisy dancing. Hilda is a good sport and tries them all out, but can they compare to her love of dancing?
I love the colorful pictures and the rhyming in this book!
Sakes Alive! A Cattle Drive! - by Karma Wilson
This is another great book by Karma Wilson, cleverly written in rhyme. Two cows, Molly & Mabel take off on a joy-ride in Farmer's truck. They blow through stop signs (cows can't read, of course!), get chased by the police ("Look at the pretty flashing lights!"), and sideswipe the mayor's garden.
Preschoolers (and parents) will get a kick out of the ending!
Love You Forever - Robert Munsch
"I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always. As long as I'm living, my baby you'll be.
This book gets me teary every time. It talks about a growing little boy who drives his mom crazy with his antics. But at night, if that boy is really asleep, she sneaks across the room, and rocks him while singing her song. (Ever notice how sometimes they look so much sweeter when they're asleep?)
"Love You Forever" has been passed along to new moms on my husbands side of the family. It's definitely good enough to share with the moms that you know.
On The Night You Were Born - Nancy Tillman
"..because there had never been anyone like you....ever in the world."
This book has beautiful words and pictures. We initially had borrowed this from the library during a "frazzled mom" time....it was such a nice book for us to read together that we had to add it to our collection.
Celebrate your child every day with this book!
Sleepy Bears - Mem Fox
Sleepy Bears is one of our favorite bedtime books. Mother bear tells each of her cubs "their own special rhyme" before they doze off one by one for their winter slumber.
This is a very sweet book to help your own little one fall fast asleep.
The Runaway Pumpkin - Kevin Lewis
Although this story takes place on Halloween, it is a book to be read at any time of the year.
I especially like the cadence of the rhyme. Buck & Billy Baxter pluck a GIANT pumpkin from its stem. The two boys and their little sister Lil watch the pumpkin wreak havoc with family members and farm animals alike as it rolls down the hill.
This thumpin' bumpin' round and rolly runaway pumpkin will knock you for a loop!
Pocket Full of Kisses - Audrey Penn
This is one sequel that I like better than its original, The Kissing Hand.
Chester raccoon wonders if his mother will run out of kissing hands if she has to give them to him and to his little brother Ronnie. She lovingly assures him that she will never run out of kissing hands, and gives him an extra one for his pocket.
"A Pocket Full of Kisses" is especially great if your older child wonders if you still have enough love for them when siblings join the family
God Gave Us You - Lisa Tawn Bergen
Little Cub isn't quite ready to go to bed - first she wants to know where she came from. Mama bear tells her about how she was lovingly conceived and anticipated - a gift from God.
When Little Cub asked if Mama ever wanted a different kid like Sammy the Seal or Fredrika the Fox, Mama's reply is "Never, never, never. God gave us you!"
The Going To Bed Book - Sandra Boynton
"...they rock, and rock, and rock to sleep."
In the character of Sandra Boynton books, this is a nice, easy read. It has a great rhythm and flow to it, and it's just perfect for....well....Going To Bed!
